Choosing The Right Martial Art For You
Choosing The Right Martial Art For You
The rise in the popularity of martial arts and the increasing awareness of people who want to know how to protect themselves means that more of us are now considering joining a class. The fact that mixed martial arts on the television has gained a wide audience adds to the fact that the various styles available are given greater publicity. The majority of us are not of course looking to become involved at that extreme level and just want to reap some of the benefits that learning a martial art can give us. If you are looking to start in martial arts, this article will provide some guidance in helping you make the right choice for you.
The first consideration in joining a club is to decide what your aims are and what you want to achieve. The various styles are geared towards different types of learning and some are more formal and traditional whereas others are just designed to help you learn practical fighting techniques. If you want to take up a style that involves competition, then look for a martial art where you can compete at various levels. For instance, Judo and Tae Kwon Do are Olympic sports, so if you dream of competing for a gold medal this could be for you. It may be that you just want to learn a very effective way to defend yourself in a real situation and so something like Jeet Kune Do could be the type of class you will want to join.
The style you choose may also be influenced by your body type and although you can give any of the martial arts a try it is worth thinking about what is involved and how it might suit you. Tae Kwon Do and Karate involve kicks and strikes and that is not always suitable for everyone. If grappling and throws are more to your abilities then look towards Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. In other words, different styles rely on different skills and it is a matter of finding one that most matches your physical ability. They are all effective in their own way and once you find the right style you will have a greater chance of progress.
There are some martial arts that are far more popular than others and depending on where you live, this may have an influence in the style you choose. It is important in the end that you find a reputable instructor and club and you will need to do your own research in this respect. In most towns and cities for instance, you will find Karate clubs and it is probably fair to say that some will be better than others. In addition, a martial art like Karate has many different forms in itself and each will have its various claims to how effective they are. Once again, you will probably find a style that is right for you, so do your own research rather than be influenced by the various claims made by others.
It is now easier than ever to take part in martial arts and if you do your research you will find the style that best suits your goals.
