How To Deal With Frizzy Hair

If your lovely locks tend to run wild with frizz, you may be frustrated enough to feel like pulling them out. Every time you step outside on a humid day, take a shower, or even just comb your hair, you are suddenly sporting the "finger in a light socket" look. If this sounds all too familiar, there are steps you can take to tame the beast, without breaking the bank on expensive serums or salon styling.

According to leading medical experts, your hair shaft is comprised of three layers, and the outer layer is not a solid, smooth surface. It is made of tiny overlapping cells which, ideally, lay perfectly smooth like shingles. Frizzy hair happens when these cells lift, making your hair kink, curl, and become stiff.

Most often, frizzy hair is dry hair. Intense conditioning, overnight oil treatments, and hydrating shampoos/conditioners can help tame hair. Don't wash your hair too often. Besides drying out hair, it disrupts the cuticle layer. When you do wash it, use plenty of conditioner and carefully blot hair dry.

Styling products can be your closest friend or worst enemy in the battle against frizz. If your hair is severely dry, you should consider a light-weight, leave-in conditioner. Alternately, you can use a tiny dab of most regular conditioners mixed with water and massage it into hair after showering. In either case, never apply it close to the roots.

Some anti-frizz products contain silicone, which effectively smooths hair and repels water, but they also attract dirt, dull quickly, and weigh down fine hair. Products containing oil or moisturizers are a better option. If you decide to glue down frizzy hair with sprays and gels, be careful of your choice. Any stiffening product, by necessity, removes the natural flexibility of hair. If you must use these products, look for ones specifying gentle or flexible.

One of the most popular treatments for frizzy hair is a straightening iron, but don't be tempted. The heat damages the outer and inner layers of the hair, weakens hair, promotes split ends, and irons don't really tame frizz. If you feel you must straighten you hair, look for non-damaging serums or special shampoos. Alternately, you can use a gentle setting lotion with oversized rollers to transform tight curls to gentle waves.

If your hair is exposed to heat, either environmental or through styling, it should be trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks, depending on speed of growth. This removes all split ends, which contribute to frizz. Additionally, consuming more protein or using protein containing products strengthens hair structure, making it less susceptible to damage. Just eat right and don't over style, and you'll be well on your way to winning the battle with the frizz.
