Save On Gasoline By Changing Your Driving Habits
Save On Gasoline By Changing Your Driving Habits
There isn't much that you can do to lower fuel prices, but you can learn to save money on your fuel costs by driving differently. It is the easiest way to increase your fuel efficiency and it won't cost you a single penny. You will have to change the way you drive your vehicle, and that might not be as simple as you think. Before the price of gas became so high, it didn't matter that much how fast and crazy you drove your car, but now it is costing you a lot of money.
Most people never even consider that their driving habits are costing them quite a bit of money, but when you watch people drive you know they could save money. You can't change how much it will cost when fill up at the pump, but you can change how often you need to fill up. Probably the biggest mistake drivers make is the way they accelerate too often. The vast majority of drivers are always accelerating, and you will notice this if you just watch how people drive. It doesn't matter if they are 50 feet from a red light or a corner they are turning at, they will continue to have their foot on the gas pedal until they need to brake. There are a number of reasons why this is a mistake, and why it affects fuel consumption.
When you are going to stop in a short distance, it makes no sense to speed up when coming to a red light. What is wrong with taking your foot off the gas and coasting? Not only will this be good for your brakes, but as you are coasting, the light might turn green and you can accelerate without coming to a complete stop. Your car will use less gas while it was coasting, and less gas not having to start from a complete stop. Since the light is red and you have to stop anyway, why speed up to it? Same thing when you have a turn to make, there is no reason for accelerating until you turn.
When you do this, you have to brake hard in order to make the turn. It won't cost you much time to let off of the gas pedal, coast into your turn without having to brake so hard, and making your turn. This will be good for your gas mileage, and save on your brakes. The same thing happens when you tailgate other drivers, where you are always slamming on the brakes. Not only can it cause an accident, but you are only wasting gas.
Aggressive driving only costs you money in wasted gas, possible tickets and accidents. You will get where you are going just as quickly and you will save wear and tear on your car, as well as gasoline. Not only that you will be a lot less stressed out, especially at other drivers.
